INTRODUCTION
Since its inception in September 1959, the Zoology Department of Lady Keane College has been trying its best to maintain a high academic performance, and to a great extent, has achieved success till date. The faculty includes two Ph.D holders, two gold-medallists and one faculty is pursuing his Ph.D work. Three teachers are UGC-NET qualified (two under sanction posts and one which is full-time adhoc post) and all have attended Orientation/Refresher Courses besides various seminars/workshops related to the subjects.
Students are admitted on merit basis with at least 50% marks to be eligible to take Zoology honours. Students come from various strata of society. Generally, over 90% of B.Sc. III students get through every year and some get top-10 positions. Many students are able to pursue higher studies and are well placed. Dr Mrs C. Diengdoh (currently the Director of College Development Campus, NEHU), Smt B. Baruah (Marine biologist in Australia) and Dr Ms L. Lyndem (Reader in Vishwa Bharati, Shantiniketan) are shining alumni of the department, to name a few.
The syllabus was revised in 2009. One of our faculty was a member in the Board of Undergraduate Studies under the North- Eastern Hill University. Learning resources of the department include library, laboratory, study tours and internet. Every year students are being taken for a study tours of some important palces including the government Sericulture Farm and collection centre of Zoological Survey of India in Shillong, the Poultry Breeding Farm at Kyrdemkulai, Ri Bhoi District. Occasionaly, study tours were organised in Sikkim.
Under DBT Star College scheme, the department had successfully organised a State-Level Seminar on Emerging Trends in Human Reproductive Technology in October 2009 and a College Workshop on Inspect Biodiversity on 10 November 2010.
