INTRODUCTION

Established in 1958 with Intermediate Science and Mr. Harendra Nath Das as the first teacher of Physics ( affiliated to Gauhati University), the Undergraduate Pass Course in Physics was started one year later. To strengthen the efforts of the college for promoting Science Education amongst women of the region and to initiate them into the sphere of Basic Sciences, Physics Honours Course was introduced in the year 1965. Though only two students Ms. Aparajita Mukherjee & Ms. Basana Bhattacharjee were enrolled in the first batch of the Honours Course, they passed out in the year 1968 with commendable results.

Both the graduates opted careers in academics. Ms. A. Mukherjee retired from Lady Keane College as the Vice Principal and Head of the Department of Physics in 2009 and Ms. Basana Bhattacharjee was first appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Physics, Lady Keane College.She continued to serve in the Department till 1986 and joined as a lecturer in Regional Engineering College, Silchar. She retired as an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics in NIT (earlier Regional Engineering College), Silchar. Prof. B. Jyrwa and Prof. P.Nongkynrih of the Department of Physics, NEHU were the students of the Department of Physics, Lady Keane College who graduated in the year 1976.

Furthermore, in remembrance to our departed colleague, Dr. Wendy Basaiawmoit, who graduated as a Physics Honours Student of our College and joined as a Full time Lecturer in the Department of Physics, Lady Keane College in the year 1983. She was serving the Department of Physics of the College till her Resignation in 1986 due to her new appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics, NEHU and continue serving in the University till she expired in the year 1993.During her service as the faculty member of the Department of Physics NEHU, once or twice she was appointed as the External Examiner. May her soul rest in peace.

Ever since, the Department has never looked back and the students have consistently topped the merit list in the Physics Honours Examination conducted by the University

With the establishment of North Eastern Hill University - a central university within the state capital, affiliation was granted to the college in the year 1973.
