YUVA TOURISM CLUB
Recognising the potential of the country's large youth population as both a future workforce and a vibrant tourism market, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, launched the "YUVA Tourism" initiative as part of the India@75 celebrations in 2022. One of the key objectives of this initiative is to establish Tourism Clubs in educational institutions to encourage youth participation in tourism activities, promote awareness of heritage and culture, and foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and responsible travel practices among students.
Objective of the CLUB
Tourism clubs is an important aspect for promoting responsible and sustainable tourism in the country. The initiative would help in developing the right culture among the youth of the country through formulating social clubs at various academic institutions. The major objective of the proposed mission could be to:
- To educate youth about diverse cultures and geographies of the country
- To appreciate the importance of travel and tourism in education
- To create awareness about tourism opportunities at an early stage
- To teach and propagate responsible tourism practises
- To train students as skilled tourist guides and volunteers in hospitality sector
- To facilitate better coordination for study tours and student exchange programmes
Overview of the YUVA Tourism Club
The YUVA Tourism Club of Lady Keane College, Shillong, was officially inaugurated on 28th May 2022 in the presence of distinguished dignitaries and faculty members. The event was graced by the Principal, Dr D. K. B. Mukhim, along with Mr Wanpynsuk Makri, the Faculty Coordinator, and Miss Montimon Diengdoh, Head of the Department of Tourism and Travel Management. The occasion was further supported by Assistant Professors Dr Londoner Murphy Sohtun, Dr Miss Hakamelamphylla Mawroh, and Mr. Sushant B. Surong. Supported by India Tourism Shillong under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, the club aims to engage students in meaningful tourism-related activities, enhance their understanding of heritage and sustainable tourism practices, and nurture responsible global citizens prepared to contribute to the dynamic and evolving tourism sector.
Members of the YUVA Tourism Club
At Lady Keane College, Shillong, the YUVA Tourism Club has been constituted in alignment with the guidelines of the Ministry of Tourism to promote tourism awareness and student engagement.
The Club operates under a structured framework with a designated Faculty Coordinator and a Student Coordinator who jointly oversee its planning, implementation, and overall functioning. Membership comprises selected students based on institutional criteria, ensuring active participation and commitment, with a minimum strength of 25 student members as mandated. The current strength of the YUVA Tourism Club at the college comprises 110 students from diverse academic backgrounds. In each academic session, members are enrolled based on student interest and registration.
Focused Activities
The Club actively undertakes a range of academic and co-curricular activities at the college level, focusing on heritage awareness, sustainable tourism practices, community engagement, and skill development, thereby contributing to the broader objectives of the YUVA Tourism initiative as per the Yuva Tourism Club Concept Note by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
