1. The Popular Talk organised by the Department of Mathematics, Lady Keane
College.
The Department organised a popular talk titled â€A Brief account of Galois’ contributions towards Algebra†on 22.09.2018 for the honours students of 1st , 3rd and 5th semesters of the Department at the seminar hall of the college.. The resource person for the talk was Dr. A.M.Buhphang , Head of the Department of Mathematics, NEHU . She started by asking a question of why we study Algebra. In her speech she gave a brief insight into group theory by discussing about how Group theory was developed from the perspective of theory of equations. Some known results such as Cardan’s method of solving a cubic equation, solvability of equations by radicals and existence of a quintic equation which is not solvable by radicals were briefly discussed . The talk ended with an account of Galois’ life and his contributions to Algebra.
After the talk, on the same day, the Department organised a felicitation programme for the outgoing students of the Department who passed the Bsc final examination conducted on April –May, 2018 in presence of all Honours students of the Department from first semester to fifth semester. Refreshments were provided to all present at the end of the programme
